Summit - High Adventure and James C. Justice National Scout Camp

(July 13-20, 2024)

In a first for the Troop, Troop 680 sent two groups to the Summit Bechtel Resrve in Glen Jean, WV., to participate in two different programs.  One group participated in the high adventure "Summit Experience" program from July 13-19 while the other group attended regular Scout camp at the James C. Justice National Scout Camp from July 14-20.  

The Summit Experience crew was the third crew Troop 680  has sent to the Summit for high adventure since the program opened in 2014. and by all acoounts, it was a great time.  Over the years the program has changed slightly and this year the crew had an opportunity to participate in half-day whitewater trip on the New River.  Other program opportunities remained largely unchanged and included:  mountain bikikng, BMX, skateboard, rifles, shotgun, archery, and climbing.

Scouts attending regular summer camp at Camp Justice had a great program and ample opportunities to earn Merit Badges, work on rank advancement, and participate in a variety of evening activities similar to what the high adventure crew experienced.  A few Scouts also decided to check out the 3/4 mile long "Big Zip" zipline.  The week concluded with an amazing campfire program in which Troop 680 contributed a fun and original skit.

• • July 7 - Regular Troop meeting at 5:00 PM at Good Shepherd,  Front Lawn (Capture the Flag - Class B Shirts permitted).

  • July 13  - Summit Experience High Adventure Crew Departs for Summit.  Assemble at Northrop Hall at 7:30 AM, Departure at 8:00 AM.

  • July 14 - Summit Scout Camp Crew Departs for Summit.  Assemble for gear check at Northrop Hall at 7:00 AM; Departure at 8:00 AM.

  • July 14 - No Troop Meeting (everyone is at camp)

  • July 19 - Summit Experience High Adventure Crew Returns from Summit.

  • July 20 - Summit Scout Camp Crew Returns from Summit. 

  • July 22 - Virtual PLC at 7:00 PM

  • July 27 - Opportunity to complete First Class Requirements 4a & 4b (orienteering and using a GPS) at Burke Lake  Park.  Meeting time is 9:00 AM.  We expect to finish by 11:30 AM.  Class B uniform.

  • July 28 - Troop Meeting at Fort Hunt Park - The theme of the meeting is music and the Troop will attend the free concert in the park.  The concert is at picnic Pavilion A and begins at 7:00 PM.  Scouts are being asked to arrive between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM.  Scouts should bring a camp chair.  Snacks are optional and Scouts may wish to bring a football or frisbee to toss around before the concert starts.  Class B shirts are allowed for this event.
