Assateague Beach Trip

(August 28 - 30)

This month Troop 680 went on its annual Assateague beach campout on Assateague Island in Maryland.  This year, we packed out on Thursday evening and left in groups on Friday at different times.  The first group to arrive set-up the tents and Pahaque awnings.   After everyone else got there, we went to bed.   We woke up Saturday morning and the cooks started to make breakfast while everyone else started digging the “chill pit” (the massive hole we dig every year).  After breakfast we went to the beach and swam in the ocean for about 3 hours.  We came back to the campsite around noon for lunch and kept on digging the chill pit.   After lunch some of us went back to the ocean and the rest of us played football in the campsite.   After dinner, we partially packed up and then had a campfire during which, we retired several flags.  The Scouts in our neighboring campsite were much slower in cleaning up and a herd of wild ponies made an unexpected visit to their campsite looking for food and tore up the place, toppling and eating trash containers and food that had not yet been packed away.   The next morning, we packed up the tents and headed out, stopping for mass at the same church we go to every year.  The parishioners were happy to see us and two of our Scouts helped with the collection.  We then headed back to Northrop Hall, unpacked the gear, and headed home. Overall it was a very fun campout and also quite successful with several Scouts completing rank requirements and no significant injuries.

• • September 13 - Regular Troop Meeting at 5:00 PM at Northrop Hall - Art Themed Meeting

  • September 20 - PLC Meeting.  We are in the process of confirming whether the meeting will be in person or Zoom and whether it will be at the regular Troop meeting time (5:00 PM) or earlier in the day due to some participant conflicts.  We will update shortly.

  • September 27 - Fall Court of Honor at Good Shepherd at 5:00 PM.  Award recognition information has been circulated by email.  It is your responsibility to check and make sure it is accurate with respect to yourself.  (Patrol food assignments are to the  right)

  • October 4 - Regular Troop Meeting at Good Shepherd at 5:00 PM.   Planning for Camporee.

  • October 11 - Time Change:  Regular Troop Meeting at Good Shepherd at 4:30  PM.  The Troop will be performing a service project (invasive  plant removal and related work) with Care for Creation.

• October 16-18 - Accotink Bay District Fall Camporee

• November 7-8 -  Introduction to Backpacking / Spooky Backpacking Trip along the Appalachian Trail

• December 5-6 - Overnight Adventure on the USS Torsk.  Please note, space is limited because we are doing this as an overnight experience with the Pack 680 AOLs
